Some Shiny New Medals For The Cabinet… – Scottish Beer Awards 2017

Alright, so they’re more like perspex monoliths rather than medals, but the point is we cleaned up yet again in the taste categories at the Scottish Beer Awards!

Tempest Brewing Co - Best IPA

The same week we were prepping for Oktoberfest, we took a night out to get suited and booted and spend an evening in the company of some of Scotland’s best breweries at the Scottish Beer Awards. So on the big day of Oktoberfest we were either going to be toasting success or drowning our sorrows…thankfully, it was the former as we took home six shiny new awards for our beer!

Let’s take a look at the lucky six…

MODERN HELLES – GOLD – BEST LAGER

MH-Gold-2

We wanted to start on one we were all very excited about and that’s Modern Helles now officially being the Best Lager in Scotland!
Back at the start of the year when we first released it, we knew we wanted to create a well-made, easy drinking, flavourful lager, giving it the time and respect it needed. Our Scottish take on a Bavarian classic is light, clean, and crisp with great malt flavour, with light spice and tangerine notes from a generous addition of Madarina Bavaria hops.

SEASONS: SPRING – SILVER – BEST SOUR

Something else to be very proud of was our collaboration beer taking home a medal. Near the start of the year, we announced our Seasons collaboration project; a joint effort between ourselves, Fallen Brewing, Cromarty Brewing, and Pilot, to create 4 beers inspired by and made to be enjoyed during the different seasons of the year.

The first was a Rhubarb and Citrus sour; it was fresh and zingy, with great rhubarb flavour, citrus bite, and incredibly refreshing mouthfeel. The perfect beer to shake off winter and welcome in springtime.

BRAVE NEW WORLD – SILVER – BEST IPA

BNW---Smallr

And weren’t we chuffed to discover that Brave New World continues to be a champion amidst the many IPA’s of Scotland! Our core range IPA has always been a long time favourite with the team and with fans of Tempest; big bittersweetness balanced against biscuity malt, with classic pine and grapefruit hop character.

SOMA IPA – GOLD – BEST IPA

Soma-Gold

Now you may have been wondering why we were so happy about Brave New World despite it losing its Gold status, and that’s because this dethroned it!
“The beer formerly known as Bomber IPA” took the crown for Best IPA this year, and we couldn’t be happier. After a year where it lost its name and its bottle, Soma has risen to the top and we can’t wait to get more of it out into the world. It’s new fancy label and 330ml packaging will be unleashed very soon…so watch this space!

MARMALADE ON RYE – SILVER – BEST AMPLIFIED BEER

Marmalade-on-Rye-Silver

Marmalade on Rye is always a team favourite – except when someone gets assigned the task of zesting the oranges…but the effort’s clearly worth it. This was up against some really big beers, including some of our own big ones from the last year like The Alligator Man.
But, you just can’t beat that big jammy mouthfeel and sticky ginger, bittersweet orange flavour…or can you?

IN THE DARK WE LIVE: DARK FRUITS EDIT – GOLD – BEST AMPLIFIED

In-The-Dark---Dark-Fruits

It turns out, yes, Marmalade can be beat, but you can just picture how we all leapt up when this was announced at the one that beat it!
In The Dark We Live: Dark Fruits Edit took our long-standing, well loved Black IPA recipe and turned it up to 11 by adding blackberries, blackcurrants, and black raspberries. Intense hop bitterness and blackberry up front, followed by rich, dark malt, and resinous, juicy hop flavour.
