Biking and Brewing: A Weekend at Tweedlove Bike Festival

Like beer, we also have a passion for mountain biking here at Tempest. The Borders is home to many first class mountain biking and cycling trails and Tweed Valley is known locally as Bike Valley.  Each year the wonderful folk at Hillside Outside organise the award winning Tweedlove Bike Festival bringing to Oor Valley

This year we wanted to get involved. The first step for us was to become the Official Beer Partner for the festival…and what does that mean exactly? Well Gavin had the genius idea of brewing a beer for the festival to give to the riders during the International Enduro. Who wouldn’t welcome a cold beer after a long cycle?

The tricky part, was what do we brew that’ll be big and flavoursome as we like to usually do, but one that’ll be low ABV enough for cyclists to feel like they were able to actually drink it and still cycle? The answer came quick, as Gavin told the team about the “Radler” style of beer originally being made in Germany for cyclists. Taken from the German word for cyclist, Radler is typically light beer mixed with lemonade or fruit juice, lowering the ABV and making it more refreshing and fruity.

Our take on this is “Totally Radler”, you might have seen it about recently! A Pilsner style radler made with Pink Grapefruit and Blood Orange juice, creating a light, refreshing, and zingy beer perfect for quenching the thirst you’ll build up when biking.

So, the beer was brewed, and we were raring to go. On Friday the 20th of May, we set up our new beer tent on Tweed Green in Peebles ready for the Shimano International Enduro to kick off. The whole weekend we poured pint after pint of fresh, cold beer; Mango Berlinner and Totally Radler proved popular and given the sunny weather we weren’t surprised!

In addition, all the competitors were welcomed home with a bottle of Radler on completion of Day Two of the Enduro. Clearly a welcome refreshment after a hard days riding…

We even had our sponsored competitor, Draymaster Scott, in the Men’s Enduro; who can be seen below wearing his Tempest enduro jersey about to set off on day one of the event.
